In their own words

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

My name is Juan Estrada. I am an attorney, a homeowner, a small business owner and the proud son of immigrants. I've lived Gwinnett County for the last 20 years mainly in Norcross and Lawrenceville. I graduated from Norcross High School ('10) but also attended Central Gwinnett HS for a short time due to housing instability. I went to GGC ('14) for college and Georgia State College of Law ('19).

Through college I worked in retail, manual labor, and as a bankruptcy paralegal and I worked full time through law school either as an insurance adjuster or paralegal. After law school I interned at the Senate Budget Committee under U.S. Senator Bernard Sanders where I catered on the weekends in order to make ends-meet while in Washington D.C. When I got the results of my bar exam, it was time to return to Georgia where I opened Juan Estrada Law to help injured parties, tenants, and persons who are seeking justice from insurance companies or other parties who have wronged them.

I've spent my career helping working people. With regard to Housing Rights. I spent about two years in the Fulton County Housing Court Assistance Center helping people who were at risk losing their homes to Covid. I stood in front of the PSC to try to lower our electric bills. I regularly represent injured parties who seek justice from greedy insurance companies. I hope District 109 trusts me to use my life experience, work experience, and expertise to fight for a better tomorrow.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

The cost of living has gotten out of control.

Housing and Rent have steadily been increasing in the last ten years, Electric bills have gone up six times in the last two and a half years, car insurance went up 22% in 2022 alone. Hundreds of thousands of Georgians have lost health insurance either in part or completely because of cost. All of this while our national government gives billions, if not trillions, of dollars in tax breaks to billionaires and the richest corporations.

Everyone is hurting: From the young people who are having an extremely hard time becoming independent and living on their own to the older folks who see retirement as a less viable option with each and passing day. We need to get the cost of living under control. We must move to a system that guarantees healthcare to all at a lower cost to working families. The first step is expanding medicaid in the state of Georgia. Every year that Georgia does not expand medicaid, Georgia is losing access to hundreds of millions of dollars of our federal tax dollars for healthcare. On top of that, our current healthcare system leaves us all subject to sudden premium increases. We must take every step towards a universal healthcare system that puts health over profits-I strongly believe in the strength of our public schools and believe that every student should receive a quality education regardless of socio economic background. Georgia currently has a funding formula for schools that can disproportionally disparage students who come from less than privileged backgrounds. Additionally, Georgia appears to be moving towards a system that allows public tax dollars to be given to private institutions. This will only further disparage the strength of our public schools and dilute the opportunity our tax dollars bring to our public education system.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Healthcare, Education,  Jobs, Tenant's Rights, Climate Change,  Affordability
