In their own words

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

My name is Joe Spica, and I am born and raised in Las Vegas, NV. I’m a husband and father of 3 amazing boys. I believe that we need to make sure our kids have better opportunities than we did, and we are making sure the government works for the working class, not just the top.

I am a proud Culinary Union Member and Shop Steward for the past 15 years. I sit on the Contract Negotiations Committee, Tip Compliance Board and Patient Advocacy Board for the Culinary Health Centers.

As a Contract Negotiator I have gone face to face with the largest corporations in Nevada, such as MGM, Ceasers, The Wynn, The Venetian, The Cosmo and many more, and helped to win the best contracts for over 60,000 members.

As a member of the Tip Compliance Board I collaborated with leaders such as US Representative Steven Horsford to advocate against the IRS punishing tip earners and to provide factual data to the IRS so workers are not being unfairly targeted.

As a member of the Patent Advocacy Board, I am a voice for the members and family’s of the Culianry Union for better care and services at the Health Centers. From making sure enough Pediatricians are available for our family’s, to new services like MRI’s, CT Scans and Physical Therapy , when members see a need to make the Health Centers better, I speak with Union Leadership to make real changes that people can see and feel.

This is what I want to bring to the Nevada Assembly. Real Change for Real People .

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

N.V. Energy and The PUC have installed a new “Demand Charge” that will end up costing everyone more money on their bills every single month.

I have been speaking out against this terrible policy since last year, and I will continue to fight until this is repealed and no utility can do this to the hard working people of Nevada who are already struggling to afford everything just to live.

We need lower utility bills, not higher, and we need to focus on making things better for the working class, not punishing them.Housing is the state of Nevada is out of control. Over 23% of all family homes are owned by a corporation or hedge fund. This is madness. How can families and first time home buyers compete against billionaire Wall Street investors?

We need to level the playing field and get these corporations out of our family homes. We need to cap how many homes these entities are allowed to own and then make it easier for families to get into owning. This is the American Dream for so many, and for too long this dream has become impossible. Let’s work together to make sure everyone has a fair shot at home ownership. As a father of 3 boys who all go to public schools in my district, I know how important education is. I have worked with the Principals and Teachers at all my kids school to make sure they have everything they need to succeed.

But we can and must do better.

We need to make sure we have our schools have not only the right number of teachers and staff they need, but the supplies as well.

In my district we have the most beautiful fields in our schools, and yet we are not utilizing them to the fullest. We should have more sports and activities ran through our schools to get our kids involved and learn and wining and losing as a team.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Affordability. Every single item we buy and service we pay for has increased dramatically. Utility Bills, Insurance, Rent and Mortgage, groceries, gas, healthcare . You name it, it has skyrocketed.

We need people in government that know what it is like to worry about 500$ power bills and spending over 100$ at the grocery store for a few bags that will only last a couple days.

We need people that will fight for real change that the working class can see and feel in their bank account.

When i am elected, i will fight everyday for the middle class, for the ones that work day in and out, working all hours from Graveyard to Swing Shift, and always putting the people that make our city amazing above everything else.
