Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

Jim Toes has over 30 years experience in the financial services industry and is the CEO of the Security Traders Association. Jim has lived his entire life in NY-03 and his father was a NYPD Captain. He and his wife Jeanine, have four children, all of whom graduated public high school.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Jim believes the U.S. Constitution is the greatest political document that has ever been written. He is an optimist who firmly believes there is no problem that the American people cannot solve. Jim is a political outsider with hands-on experience dealing with our federal government on national issues. He brings a fresh voice and a well-informed perspective. He believes it is time for an approach to politics that embraces collaboration and seeks common ground to drive progress.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

My father who instilled in me the values of honesty and hard work and a responsibility to protect the most vulnerable.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Elected officials should realize that public service is a privilege, not a right, and people who accept the privilege of holding office in government accept that their entire conduct should be open to inspection by the people they are serving

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I listen, have empathy and seek a middle-ground. My work is my bond.

What legacy would you like to leave?

To be considered an honorable man.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

I was an equity trader at Oppenheimer & Co. for seven (7) years. 1986 to 1994

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

I have been pleased with a loving family, good health and no addictions. Otherwise, my struggles are no different than the common person.

What qualities does the U.S. House of Representatives possess that makes it unique as an institution?

The House of Representatives represents the interests of the American people more so than the Executive and Judicial branches.

Do you believe that it's beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?

I believe that representatives have experience in the public and private sectors.

What do you perceive to be the United States' greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?

Our nation is divided along political and economic lines. I believe there is no problem that the American people cannot solve,

Do you believe that two years is the right term length for representatives?

Yes.

What are your thoughts on term limits?

I believe in a combination of term limits and mandatory retirement age.

Is there a particular representative, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?

No.

Both sitting representatives and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?

I have friends whose children were serviceman killed in action and poisoned by fentanyl. I have also witnessed families harmed by the job loss.

Do you believe that compromise is necessary or desirable for policymaking?

Yes, I believe in democracy therefore I believe in compromise

The Constitution says that all bills for raising revenue must originate in the House. What role would this power play in your priorities if elected?

A significant role. The House is responsible for the oversight of all government agencies and it should exercise this responsibility through the appropriations processl

How should the U.S. House use its investigative powers?

With clear eyes and with bi-partisan participation.
