In their own words

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

My name is Jessica Beasley, and I am running for the South Carolina House of Representatives in District 11. I am not a career politician. I am a working-class woman, a mother of five, and someone who understands what it means to struggle and rebuild.

I was once a high school dropout. At a young age, I decided to focus on raising my children and providing for my family. For years, I put my dreams on hold while working and doing everything I could to create stability at home. When my children were grown, I decided to take my life back and invest in myself. I went back to school, earned my degree in accounting, and I am now pursuing a master’s degree in leadership.

I have spent years watching decisions being made that did not reflect the needs of everyday people. Through my involvement in local leadership programs and community discussions, I saw clearly which leaders show up and which ones do not. That is what pushed me to step forward.

I am running because I know what it feels like to be overlooked, underestimated, and unheard. District 11 deserves someone who understands real life and is willing to stand up and fight for the people.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

Affordability matters because families across District 11 are feeling the pressure every single day. The cost of groceries, housing, utilities, and basic necessities continues to rise while wages are not keeping up. Too many people are working hard and still struggling to get ahead. That is not right. I understand this because I have lived it. I know what it means to make tough choices, to stretch a paycheck, and to put your family first. As your representative, I will focus on practical solutions that help ease that burden. This includes supporting policies that strengthen our local economy, invest in good paying jobs, and ensure that working families are not left behind. When we talk about affordability, we are talking about real people,South Carolina families deserve stronger investment in education, healthcare, and economic opportunity. Our communities are facing real challenges, from underfunded schools to limited access to affordable healthcare. I will work to ensure responsible budgeting that prioritizes people, supports educators, and creates pathways for workforce development. Investing in our communities today is essential to building a stronger, more sustainable future for tomorrow. It is time to restore trust in government by putting people before politics. I am committed to transparency, open communication, and collaboration across all communities. I will show up, listen, and work with others to solve problems rather than create division. District 11 deserves a representative who is accessible, responsive, and dedicated to serving the public with integrity and purpose.

It is also time for District 11 to have a meaningful seat at the decision-making table, not just recognition through ceremonial resolutions. Our communities deserve real advocacy, real investment, and a voice that influences policy, not one that is overlooked.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I am most passionate about education, workforce development, healthcare access, and community investment. I believe every student deserves a safe and well-resourced learning environment, and every educator deserves support and respect. I am also committed to expanding workforce readiness programs that connect individuals to meaningful employment opportunities.

Access to affordable healthcare is critical for families and seniors, and I support policies that improve accessibility and reduce financial burdens. Additionally, I am focused on strengthening local infrastructure and ensuring rural communities receive the attention and investment they deserve. My goal is to create policies that improve quality of life and provide long-term stability

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I do not look up to any one individual personally. Instead, I draw inspiration from the values of resilience, accountability, and service. I respect leaders who remain grounded in their communities, prioritize people over politics, and lead with consistency and integrity. My approach to leadership is shaped by real-life experiences, listening to the people I serve, and a commitment to making decisions that create meaningful, long-term impact rather than seeking short-term recognition.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Integrity, accountability, and accessibility are essential. An elected official must be honest with the public, take responsibility for decisions, and remain accessible to the people they serve. Equally important is the ability to listen with respect, communicate clearly, and lead with a commitment to fairness and service rather than personal or political gain.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

The core responsibilities include representing the interests of constituents, developing and voting on legislation, and ensuring responsible stewardship of public resources. It is also critical to remain engaged within the district, advocate for local needs, and provide transparent communication so constituents understand how decisions are made and how they are impacted.

What legacy would you like to leave?

I would like to leave a legacy of action and accountability. I want to be remembered as the representative who was always present, always listening, and always willing to stand up for the people of District 11. I want to be known as someone who followed through, created real opportunities, and ensured that our communities were no longer overlooked. My goal is to leave behind stronger systems in education, workforce development, and community investment that continue to benefit people long after my time in office.

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

One of the greatest challenges in my life was stepping away from traditional education at a young age while raising a family, and later making the decision to return and complete my degree. Balancing those responsibilities required discipline and resilience, but it ultimately strengthened my determination and shaped my belief that it is never too late to pursue growth and opportunity.

What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and state legislature?

The ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature should be grounded in mutual respect, consistent communication, and a shared commitment to serving the people. There should be ongoing, transparent dialogue between all parties to ensure alignment on priorities and timely decision-making. While each branch has distinct responsibilities, effective collaboration is essential to pass meaningful legislation, manage resources responsibly, and address the needs of communities across the state. Governance should focus on solutions, not division, with an emphasis on working together in the best interest of the people rather than political differences.

What do you perceive to be your state's greatest challenges over the next decade?

South Carolina will continue to face significant challenges in education, workforce development, healthcare access, and infrastructure over the next decade. Addressing these issues will require strategic investment, stronger partnerships, and a clear commitment to ensuring that rural communities are not left behind. However, without accountability at every level of leadership, meaningful progress will remain limited. For too long, our state has struggled to keep pace with forward progress, and it is time to take a more intentional and results-driven approach. Long-term planning, transparency, and accountability will be essential to creating sustainable growth and positioning South Carolina for the future.

Do you believe that compromise is necessary or desirable for policymaking?

Compromise is necessary for effective policymaking. While it is important to stay grounded in your values, progress often requires collaboration and finding common ground. Thoughtful compromise allows leaders to move meaningful policies forward while still protecting the interests of the people they serve.

What was the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember?

One of the earliest major events I remember is the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. I was in kindergarten at the time, and I will never forget the moment in the school library when teachers quickly turned off the televisions. Even at a young age, it was clear something serious had happened. That experience left a lasting impression on me about the weight of leadership, the importance of accountability, and how moments of crisis can shape how we respond, support others, and move forward together.
