In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
As a neurosurgeon, husband, and father, my life has been defined by a deep commitment to service and a belief in the boundless potential of our community. The son of immigrants, I am a product of our public schools—a living testament to the transformative power of education and the American Dream. My journey has taken me from the precision of the operating room to the halls of the U.S. Senate, Governor’s office, and the White House, always driven by a singular mission: to do the greatest amount of good for the most people. Whether advising governors, serving as a nonpartisan White House Fellow to tackle global health crises, or advocating for students and families on the Board of Regents, I have consistently worked across the aisle to build a future where every Nebraskan has the opportunity to thrive. I believe in leadership that is principled, compassionate, and focused on the challenges of tomorrow, and this is why I am running for the University of Nebraska Board of Regents.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
Universities are among our most powerful public assets, yet we often judge their success by intangible metrics rather than whether they solve the urgent problems facing the people who support them. It is time to redefine the university not as an ivory tower, but as a problem-solving institution. There are an infinite number of challenges to solve in our state, from energy to water to workforce development, and they are only getting more complex.
Consider healthcare. A three-year undergraduate pathway paired with a three-year medical school would responsibly accelerate training for students committed to primary care. If solving our challenges counted meaningfully, NU would unleash extraordinary talent in service of the public need. Our state deserves a university of the highest caliber, which is why I’m advocating for the implementation of an "NIL for academics". My goal is to serve as an Academic Regent who places students, their education, and scientific research at the forefront, as these are the primary engines of our state and national progress. By applying the same strategic recruitment used for athletes, we can attract world-class faculty and students to NU, establishing the university as an academic powerhouse. Drawing on my experience as a neurosurgeon and entrepreneur, I recognize that today's decisions will shape our future workforce and economic growth. As I talk with parents and students across the district, they are worried about what careers will still be viable for their children. The American workforce is at an inflection point. AI is already transforming our industries. At the same time, our country faces unprecedented challenges. The students entering the University of Nebraska today are not just training for their first jobs — they are also preparing to solve problems that do not yet exist in an uncertain world. We need to prepare them with skills to be able to harness this technology in an ethical way to augment outcomes. We also need to arm our graduates with advanced skillsets so they are ready to enter their second jobs, as entry level jobs will likely no longer exist.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Our goals should be clear: keep the University of Nebraska affordable, accessible, and academically strong. That is both a financial responsibility and a moral one. We must reimagine how a university of the future invests more in teaching, research, and student success, and less on layers of organization. Over time, administrative and support costs have ballooned and outpaced faculty investment. It is important that we regularly evaluate how resources are allocated to ensure alignment with the core mission of education and research. This is about accountability, stewardship, and respect for the students and families who are making a significant investment in their future.
What organizations or individuals have endorsed your campaign?
We have a broad coalition across political parties as well as elected state and federal leaders.
