In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
My name is Jeffrey Perez, and I’m running to represent House District 84 in the Oklahoma State Legislature. I’m a bankruptcy lawyer, a first-generation college graduate, and a proud HD84 resident for more than a decade. I graduated from our public schools right here in our community. Go Patriots!
I was raised in a single-parent household, and those experiences shaped how I understand the challenges facing working families. As a lawyer, I’ve seen firsthand how financial hardship and the rising cost of living affect Oklahoma families and small businesses.
After seeing failed leadership in Oklahoma and our state fall behind in areas where we should not be lacking, including education, criminal justice, and domestic violence prevention, I decided it was time to step up. I’m running to bring a fresh perspective and practical leadership to the State Legislature.
I believe Oklahoma has the potential to do better, and I want to be part of moving our state forward and building a stronger future for the people of HD84.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
I believe every Oklahoma child deserves access to a strong public education, regardless of their ZIP code or family’s income. As a graduate of the public schools right here in HD84, I know firsthand the difference great teachers and mentors can make. Those mentors helped me make it to college, where I went on to earn my law degree. Oklahoma needs to do more to support our teachers, keep great educators in our state, reduce overcrowded classrooms, and ensure public schools have the resources they need. That means making sure taxpayer dollars go toward public schools and public services, not expanding private school vouchers when there is only one K-8 private school in our district.Oklahoma families are working hard, but too many are struggling with the rising cost of housing, groceries, healthcare, and especially homeowners insurance. As a bankruptcy lawyer, I’ve seen firsthand what happens when families and small businesses are pushed beyond their financial limits. We have to do more to make Oklahoma affordable, including addressing skyrocketing insurance costs that make homeownership harder to maintain, especially for future generations. I’ll fight for policies that lower costs, expand access to affordable housing and healthcare, protect workers, and help Oklahoma families and small businesses build financial security.I believe Oklahoma can have safer communities while building a criminal justice system that is fair, effective, and focused on preventing crime. Oklahoma ranks highest in the nation for incidences of domestic violence, and that statistic cannot be our reality anymore. We have to do more to prevent violence, support survivors, hold abusers accountable, and give people the resources they need to break cycles of violence. I’ll work to strengthen prevention and intervention programs, improve reentry resources, and make sure our criminal justice system is focused on accountability, rehabilitation, and creating safer communities.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I’m especially passionate about making homeownership more attainable for Oklahoma families. For too long, insurance companies have put profits ahead of people without enough accountability. We need stronger oversight of rate increases, greater transparency, and real consequences when policyholders are treated unfairly. We should also expand programs that help homeowners strengthen their homes against severe weather and lower their premiums. On property taxes, I’ll support targeted homestead relief to help keep rising costs from pricing families out of their homes. We may not be able to eliminate these costs, but we can do better and keep homeownership within reach for future generations.
