In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
My name is Dr. Jane Aman and I am an educator and organizer running for Florida State House District 37. I am a full-time Lecturer at the University of Central Florida and a former Seminole County high school teacher. I obtained my PhD in English from the University of Texas at Austin, where I began my teaching career. Prior to obtaining my PhD, I organized for reproductive rights with the group, Unite for Reproductive and Gender Equity (now All Above All). I have also volunteered as an events fundraiser for the Borderland Rainbow Center in El Paso and helped families escaping domestic violence at the Center Against Sexual and Family Violence. I am running because I truly believe that everyone, regardless of race, background, identity, or socioeconomic status deserves to be happy, healthy, safe, and live in comfort and dignity. Every year and every semester, I see my students struggling with things like lack of access to affordable healthcare, lack of affordable housing, and the need to work several jobs to make ends meet. In fact, when I was living just on a single teacher's salary here in Florida, I also had to work several jobs to afford to live. Additionally, I have often been one of the first people students go to when they are looking to access services to fill the gaps created by income inequality and lack of affordable healthcare, so I understand what it means to be that advocate, which is critical experience that I will take with me to Tallahassee.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
For many, Florida is too expensive to live. As a legislator, I will pursue policies that increase access to affordable housing and lower the cost of housing, like tackling high property insurance rates.Florida's families deserve strong public schools. As a legislator, I will work to fully fund our public schools, including increasing teacher, paraprofessional, and staff pay and providing funding for critical infrastructure projects. I will also work to expand workforce training programs in our public schools.Healthcare is both inaccessible and unaffordable for many of Florida's families. At the state level, I would fight to expand Medicaid and create more community partnerships in healthcare to help increase access to preventative medicine.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
As a teacher, of course, I am passionate about education. I believe all people deserve access to a high quality, public education and that investment in education is investment in our future. Beyond that, I believe we need to invest more in creative solutions to providing more affordable housing. All people deserve to live with dignity.
