In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
My name is James A.T Amah, and I am proud to call Prince George’s County my home. I was born and raised in Cameroon, and like so many immigrants, I came to the United States with hope, determination, and a belief in the power of opportunity. My journey has shaped my values — hard work, community, and the conviction that every person deserves a fair chance to succeed.
When I arrived in Maryland, I found a community that welcomed me, challenged me, and helped me grow. I built my life here. I committed myself to serving the people who make this county vibrant and diverse. I’ve seen the strength of our neighborhoods, the resilience of our families, and the potential of our young people.
Professionally and personally, I have worked to uplift others. I do this through community service, advocacy, or helping families navigate systems. These experiences taught me that leadership is not about titles. It is about listening, showing up, and fighting for the people you represent.
I am running for the Maryland General Assembly because District 23 deserves a strong, steady voice. We need someone who understands the challenges of working families, the dreams of immigrants, and the promise of this country. I want to help build a future with strong schools, stable housing, and thriving small businesses. Every resident—no matter where they come from—should have the opportunity to succeed.
My story is one of perseverance and possibility. I am running to make sure every family is good.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
Education “In District 23, education is the heart of our community. Our families deserve safe, modern schools, dedicated teachers, and real pathways to college and careers. I’m committed to expanding STEM and career‑ready programs, supporting our educators, and ensuring every child — from Bowie to South Laurel — has access to the tools and opportunities they need to succeed. Strong schools strengthen our neighborhoods, grow our economy, and secure a brighter future for Prince George’s County. Education isn’t just a priority for me; it’s the foundation of everything we want this district to become.”Housing: “Every family in Prince George’s County deserves a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home. Housing is the foundation of strong schools, strong neighborhoods, and strong futures. As our county grows, we must protect long‑time residents from being priced out, support seniors who want to age in place, and create new opportunities for working families to build wealth through homeownership. My vision is a PG County where every resident — from young professionals to multigenerational families — can find a home that fits their needs and their budget. Housing isn’t just a policy area for me; it’s about keeping our community whole.”Small Business: “In District 23, housing is about more than buildings — it’s about stability, dignity, and the ability for families to stay rooted in the communities they love. As our region grows, we must protect long‑time residents from being priced out, support seniors who want to age in place, and create new opportunities for young families to build wealth through homeownership. I’m committed to strengthening neighborhood upkeep, encouraging responsible development, and ensuring every resident — from Bowie to South Laurel — can find a safe, affordable home that fits their needs. Housing isn’t just a policy area for me; it’s about preserving the future of District 23.”
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I’m passionate about public policy shaping families' daily lives in Prince George’s County. Education tops my priorities: ensuring every child has high‑quality schools, modern facilities, and real pathways to college and careers.
I’m committed to housing stability. Too many families feel the rising costs, so I support more affordable options, help seniors to age in place, and strengthen neighborhood upkeep to keep communities safe and vibrant.
I care deeply about small businesses, the backbone of our local economy and neighborhood pride. Supporting entrepreneurship creates jobs and opportunities and keeps wealth in PG County.
Public safety is a priority—not just enforcement, but also prevention, mental health support.
