In their own words

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

Jacob Trujillo is a 26-year-old proud New Mexican, public servant, community organizer, and union member. Born and raised in Albuquerque, Jacob graduated from Albuquerque Institute for Mathematics and Science and attended the University of New Mexico.

As the son of small business owners who ran an owner-operator carpet cleaning business, Jacob grew up with a deep respect for hard work, service, and the families who keep New Mexico moving. Those values continue to shape his work today.

Jacob currently serves as a Field Representative in Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury’s district office, covering communities across Bernalillo, Torrance, and Valencia counties. In that role, he helps constituents, local governments, and community organizations navigate federal resources and support. His work also includes pro-democracy issues, education, and housing policy. He is a proud member of the Congressional Workers Union.

Outside of his professional work, Jacob serves as Chair of the Democratic Party of Bernalillo County, where he has focused on growing participation, strengthening ward and precinct leadership, supporting volunteers, and building a more active and engaged local party.

Rooted in New Mexico schools, families, and communities, Jacob’s work is centered on service, accountability, and showing up for people.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

Accountability and strong oversight must come first. The Public Education Commission is responsible for making sure state-authorized charter schools meet high academic, financial, legal, and community standards. Jacob Trujillo believes approvals should never be blank checks, and renewals should be based on transparency, performance, equity, and student outcomes. As someone who attended a New Mexico charter school and now works in public service, Jacob understands that families deserve schools they can trust and students deserve schools that are truly serving them.Every decision should be centered on students and equity. Jacob Trujillo believes charter schools must serve all students, including students with disabilities, English language learners, low-income families, rural communities, and students who have too often been left behind. The Public Education Commission should measure schools by whether they are improving outcomes, expanding opportunity, and meeting the needs of New Mexico families. Strong oversight is not about politics, it is about making sure every student has a fair chance to succeed.Community voices should be part of every major decision. Jacob Trujillo believes strong schools are built with families, educators, students, and local communities at the table. The Public Education Commission should not only review paperwork, it should listen to the people most impacted by its decisions. Whether a school is applying, renewing, improving, or facing challenges, community engagement must be real, accessible, and transparent. Jacob will prioritize open communication, public input, and decisions that reflect the needs of New Mexico families and students.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

My public policy interests are rooted in making government more accountable, accessible, and responsive to the people it serves. I am especially interested in education, housing, pro-democracy work, and policies that strengthen working families. In education, I care about transparency, oversight, student outcomes, and making sure every school serves students well. In housing, I support expanding access to safe, stable, and affordable homes. My pro-democracy work focuses on voting rights, civic participation, and ensuring people have a real voice in government. A good starting point for understanding what I believe is the Democratic Party of New Mexico platform, which reflects many values and priorities shared by a majority of our party.
