In their own words

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

Impeach Trump. Impeach Vance. I am 69 years old, recently retired from a career in electronic networking. I’ve worked as network administrator, engineer, project manager, and trainer in data communications and cybersecurity. I understand the challenge of AI and the surveillance state.Living in Ocean View, Hawaiʻi, since 2014.I am active in my community. Been politically vocal most of my life, but especially active since March 2025. A group of us here in OV have been holding signs and flags at the highway Sunday mornings since Trump’s inauguration. I’ve also pressed my Representative, Jill Tokuda, to take an active stance against the authoritarian in the White House. She responded with a 500 word non-answer to my request. In a letter to me, Rep. Tokuda wrote: "I hear the fear, anger, and urgency in your message, and I share it." That answered my question. Do not lead us from a place of fear. I challenged her to either introduce articles of impeachment against both the president and the vice president or cosponsor such a resolution before the candidate filing deadline, June 2, and I would drop out of the race and endorse her. Her position is out of step with the electorate. No response. So here I am. Backup documentation at: gregguithues.substack.comJFK was shot. Then Malcolm X. MLK, RFK. Good men killed for doing good. All before I was 12 years old. I learned that it is important to choose a side. No PAC or corporate money for the primary.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

Rep. Tokuda is following Party Leadership’s orders by not introducing articles of impeachment against the executives. Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has suppressed every impeachment effort, and stated impeachment will not be a high priority if the Democrats take the House. AIPAC has funneled more than a million dollars in earmarked PAC money to Jeffries. And Trump has an unexplained attraction to whatever Netanyahu wants.

Jill Tokuda follows Jeffries. Jeffries follows the money. “I was just following orders.” is an indefensible defense. Send me to Washington. I will say it loud and often. I have drafted multiple impeachment resolutions. I will introduce impeachment articles frequently and with flourish and gusto. Follow the Money. All of us or None of us. My platform is dignity for everybody. Homeless, uneducated, queer, foreign, Black, no difference. In this, the wealthiest nation in history, nobody needs to go hungry. Education and healthcare as human rights.

Let us protect the environment and work for the good of society at large – science, parks, general quality of life improvements. The current trend is defunding National Parks, dismantling the EPA, cutting NIH research budget. This is America. The Beautiful. Your land. My land. School should be federally funded, locally administered. Under the current plan, your community pays for your own schools, so the rich kids get better schools than the poor kids. All of us or None of us.Tax Billionaires Away. This prosperous nation is turning into an oligarchy. More and more wealth funneled to billionaires and fat corporations.

The bottom 50% of Americans have only about 2.5% of the total household wealth. The top 1% holds 32%.

Congress is charged with tax policy. Under the current administration the Executive pushed for the tax policy in Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill, which barely passed in each chamber. Hardly a mandate. It’s been happening since Reagan dropped the marginal tax rate from 70% to 28%. Current rate is 37%. Bernie Sanders isn’t the only one who thinks 1 billion is enough for anybody. Tax the excess to fund science, parks, education and healthcare for all. This is our society.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

America. Of, By, and For the People. Not the Plutocracy.

The wealthy have convinced a lot of middle class people that taxing the rich is not in their best interest. Most people don't know that Reaganomics primarily helped the already wealthy. The donor class.

First we do something substantive, like capping personal wealth at a billion dollars. I will be loud about taxing the rich in Washington, D.C. About noticing who the donor class is. About clarity regarding who Representatives work for. The election is the pressure relief valve. Gerrymandering and voter suppression cause pressure to build. The election is Plan-A. Plan-B is what happens if government doesn't properly submit to the governed.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

Patsy Mink, Representative At Large from Hawaiʻi for 12 years, then later 12 years in this seat, HI-2. In her 24 years in the US House she stood against the Vietnam War before it was fashionable, championed women and children, and authored Title IX Amendment of the Education Amendments of 1972, giving women equal access to higher education.

Daniel Inouye was in it to hold power accountable. As a US Senator he took a leadership role in holding Nixon accountable as a member of the Senate Watergate Committee and holding Reagan accountable as Chairman of the Senate Iran-Contra Committee.

I cannot go where Eddie Aikau would go. But I can go to Washington.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Integrity and the fortitude to do whatever the moment calls for. The courage to do what needs doing regardless of consequence. My judge is the people of HI-2. Not party leadership, not political donors, not the press.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

I will work for the citizens of the United States of America. The only meaningful subset of that group is the people of my district. HI-2. I will follow Jill Tokuda’s example of excellent constituent services, introduce and support bills that help those not in power. I will do what needs doing.

What legacy would you like to leave?

I would that the prosperity of this great nation be used for the benefit of the people. All of us or None of us.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

I bagged groceries for six months between High School and the Air Force.

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

I'm pretty blessed. I’ve had a good life, family, career, and now retirement. And I ended up in the most beautiful place on earth. My struggle is watching my country squander its potential and hurt its people unnecessarily. That's why I'm running.

What qualities does the U.S. House of Representatives possess that makes it unique as an institution?

Two things.

1) Purse-strings master. Federal spending and taxing bills begin in the US House of Representatives.

2) Sole Impeacher. Impeachment, the only legal remedy for an executive run amok, can only be initiated by any member of the US House of Representatives.

What do you perceive to be the United States' greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?

Trump’s legacy and the project 2025 pro-oligarchy policy. As the autocratic executive continues to consolidate power while running roughshod over the Constitution, pressure to stop it builds up. If we don’t take control using the electoral process that we have, pressure can build to bursting. That option may result in violence. Wouldn't we like to avoid that?

Do you believe that compromise is necessary or desirable for policymaking?

Absolutely. Give and take is the way of politics. Something is important to me, something else is important to you. We may see that some things are important to both of us. This Nation, Of, By, and For the People. That shall not be compromised.

What was the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember?

JFK was shot. Then Malcolm X. MLK, RFK. Good men killed for doing good. All before I was 12 years old. I learned that it is important to choose a side.
