Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

My name is Greg Blanc, and I am running for senate in District 35 because I believe the future is bright for Rapid City, Rapid Valley, and Box Elder. It has been a privilege to live and serve in these areas for decades, and I look forward to being the people’s voice in Pierre for District 35. Our district deserves a conservative senator who can be forward thinking, without compromising the foundational South Dakota values of, Faith, Family, Freedom, and Fiscal Responsibility.

Many people know me as the pastor of Calvary Chapel Community Church for the last 22 years or as the longest serving Rapid City Police Department Chaplain for the last 21 years or as a member of Human Trafficking Task Force for the last 8 years, or my role as a current Precinct Committeeman…yet when it all boils down, I am a voter, just like you, and as voters, we should be able to expect those we elect to know and represent the values of the district we live in.

My reputation in our city is one of being a visionary, a problem solver, a bridge builder, a faith leader, a decade’s long active participant in what happens in our city. I’ve been blessed with the privilege of a 20 year relationship with our mayors and city council members and business owners in our city, and I am known for making a stand for conservative political issues.

I would appreciate the opportunity to earn your vote.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

I am a Christian, conservative, common sense, constitutionalist. I believe in the principles that our nation was founded on, that all men are created equal, endowed with the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

I am life-long Ronald Reagan Republican, and I believe in his vision of a new morning in America, including South Dakota. I am running for the senate because, in the not too distant past, integrity, honesty, character, love for country and love for our fellow citizens was the norm, not the exception. I believe that we can get there again, with the right people in the right positions of influence. My mission is to be a voice for the people of District 35. To be the people’s voice, you need to know the people who you serve. Relationship is essential, and through relationship, I know the political pulse of our community, specifically my district…My district is full of South Dakotans that are hard-working, family oriented, value oriented people, and for the most part, we just want to be left alone to live our lives, without a lot of government and political intrusion…District 35 deserves a senator who will fight to maintain these principles, even in the midst of an ever increasing politically correct world.I am unashamedly:

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

We must protect The First Amendment

We must protect The Second Amendment

We must protect the life of the unborn

We must ensure election integrity

We must provide property-tax relief now

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

Jesus is my role model. He came with grace and truth. We must speak the truth in love.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Integrity, honesty, speaking truth with grace. Having a biblical worldview. Listening, learning, willing to yield to facts and science over feelings and emotions. Adherence to the US Constitution. Adherence to the SD State Constitution. Adherence to the Republican Party Platform.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

Visionary, encourager, problem solver, bridge-builder, listener, learner, organizer, initiator, administrator, strategic, cultural awareness, communicator, and I understand the power of teamwork.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

To represent the principles of the majority of those in your district WITH integrity and WITHOUT compromise.

What legacy would you like to leave?

That I loved and served the people of District 35 with integrity.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

The assassination of President John F. Kennedy. I was 6 years old.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

My mother implanted a strong work ethic in my life from an early age, and at 10 years old, I was up at 4:00 AM, 7 days a week, serving 120 customers on my paper route. After school I was folding boxes at Winchell’s Donuts for a penny a box or sweeping parking lots to earn the spending money that other parents could afford to freely give to their children.

What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and state legislature?

There must be a good working relationship between the Governor and the House and Senate, which includes a dialogue on what legislation is best for the people of South Dakota.

What do you perceive to be your state's greatest challenges over the next decade?

Now is the time to stop the political correctness that is creeping into our great state, and restore the foundational South Dakota principles of faith, family, freedom, and fiscal responsibility.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?

Previous experience in the realm of politics can be beneficial or detrimental. Having common sense is essential. Having a successful business background is of great importance. The experience of managing employees, meeting a payroll, and researching the best pricing to keep costs at a minimum is indispensable if you are responsible for being a steward of tax-payer dollars.

Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.

Strong working relationships is mandatory to any successful venture. Respect, civility, appreciation for the office must be extended to one another, as well as the ability to agree or disagree agreeably.

Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?

No

Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?

I recently met with a precious 80 year-old couple in our district who have lived here in Rapid City for decades, and retired here because the cost of living was lower…and now, their home assessments have increased to the point where they fear being property-taxed into homelessness.

My heart breaks for these respected seasoned saints that are on a fixed income, and don’t have a way to increase their revenue to balance the ever increasing property taxes, so of course, there must be property-tax reform.

They were encouraged to hear that some of the conservative legislators like myself are working on some targeted relief for those sweet grandparents, who simply want to enjoy their sunshine years without living in fear that their house is going to be taken from them. In addition, we should limit annual increases in property valuations, to bring reality and stability to our local housing market.

Should the legislature oversee or grant the use of emergency powers?

Very, very, very rarely should there be a necessity to exercise emergency powers. The degree of the emergency should have consensus and there should be a pre-determined length of time for the use of this emergency power.

What is the first bill you would introduce if elected?

Property tax reform

What organizations or individuals have endorsed your campaign?

South Dakota Right To Life PAC

Liberty Tree PAC

Americans For Prosperity PAC

South Dakota Freedom Caucus PAC

What committees interest you?

Military and Veterans

Education

State Affairs

Taxation

What are your views on financial transparency and government accountability?

Legislators are given the responsibility to be stewards of tax-payer dollars, so tax-payers have a right to access the books to ensure accountability. If it is discovered that the residents of South Dakota have been over-taxed, those additional resources should not go into the general fund, the money should be returned to the people.
