In their own words

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

Eon is a father, retail worker, lifelong Brooklynite, democratic socialist, and three-term PTA president. He’s running for State Assembly to win universal childcare, freeze the rent, and build a New York City every family can afford.

Eon has always been a tenant, growing up in East New York and in NYCHA’s Pink Houses. His father immigrated from Guyana while his mother is a second-generation Brooklynite. He attended New York City public schools and the Parsons School of Design before working as a fashion designer and clothing salesman. As a member of the bargaining committee for Workers United Local 340, Eon fought for and won crucial healthcare coverage for his fellow workers.

Eon guided his daughters’ school community through the COVID years as a three-term PTA president, co-founding a mobile food pantry that fed hundreds of Brooklynites every month. He and his wife Rebecca, a longtime public school teacher, have lived in Bedford Stuyvesant for 19 years.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

Everyone who wants to start a family deserves that opportunity, and every child in New York deserves the best. We must pass the Universal Child Care Act to guarantee the best possible start for every child.

This act will invest in building out our state's childcare infrastructure and put us on the path toward a truly universal system, where every family in our state has quality care, nobody gets priced or means-tested out, and childcare workers are treated with dignity and compensated generously, as the educators they are.

Eon believes in the right to excellent, free childcare and education, from cradle to CUNY. He supports the Green Schools for a Healthier New York platform and making CUNY and SUNY free, as they should be.Housing is a human right. Skyrocketing rents are squeezing Brooklynites out of neighborhoods where they have deep roots, and predatory real estate corporations are trying to turn our communities into commodities. Unaffordable rents are a huge driver of the affordability crisis, as Eon and his family know from experience.

Eon supports Mayor Mamdani's rent freeze and wants to expand tenant protections and freeze rents across New York State. He believes in decommodifying housing, standing up to bad landlords, and dramatically increasing funding for NYCHA. Eon supports AM Gallagher's plan to create a Social Housing Development Authority to build hundreds of thousands of units of permanently sustainable & rent-controlled housing.Eon believes an injury to one is an injury to all, and that none of us our safe from unlawful persecution or paramilitary violence as long as Donald Trump reigns with impunity and ICE is allowed to roam our streets. As the son of an undocumented immigrant and a father to two Black girls, it sickens Eon to see ICE preying on his neighbors, and he has always advocated for severing all ties between New York State and ICE, including a moratorium on immigrant detention facilities in our state.

Eon believes in healthcare, education, childcare, and the Good Life for all, regardless of where they were born or their immigration status. He believes it is every elected official's responsibility to stand up to ICE and oppose Trump's tyranny.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

As someone who has experienced the stability of NYCHA housing and the precarity of the Brooklyn housing market, and who has struggled to afford childcare despite him and his wife working full-time, Eon is passionate about making sure every family can afford the Good Life, in Brooklyn and across New York.

Eon believes universal childcare and strong tenant protections are the bare minimum we must provide for working families. He will fight for tenant power and stand up to the real estate industry that has driven so many Brooklynites out of their communities. Eon believes that our homes, schools, and childcare facilities should be green and permanently sustainable, entirely accessible, and fully-funded.
