Background

Edward Small Jr. served in the United States Air Force from August 1958 to October 1973. He attended Northern Montana College, Houston College Without Walls, Texas Southern University, and the University of California at Davis extension in Washington D.C. for undergraduate courses and the Houston Graduate School of Theology for graduate studies. Small has been associated with Harris County Council of Organizations and Prince Hall Masonic Lodge.[2]

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

Disabled Viet Nam Veteran. Retired Businessman. Volunteer Director of Houston's Martin Luther King Center; President of the Harris County Council of Organizations, Former President of the African American Tow Truck Owners Association, Former Community Action Agency Director, Former Director of a Community Economic Development Agency,. Ordained Baptist Minister and Pastor and Director of City Church Houston at the Houston MLK Center.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

We must revive the goals of the historic civil right movement which have all but been forgottenThe poor, our children, our elderly and those who have been left behind must have a voice at the table.What we eat and drink will determine how long we remain as a great nation

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Health , education, justice and agriculture

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

My Uncle who raised me. He was a gentleman who is the midst of segregation taught me to judge men by what they do not who they are.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

John Kenneth Gilbreath book "Money" teaches the goal of business is profit. The goal of politics is the growth of economy and opportubity si that every citizen can share in the prosperity of of great nation.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

To maintain honesty and integrity in what you say and do and work to show these virtues in your deportment

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I am an ordinary citizen who have never left my roots. I will be a successful office holder because I am the people I will be serving.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

To serve the people

What legacy would you like to leave?

Be a "change agent" for the everyday American Citizen

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

The end of WW II. 5 years old.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

Bakery Assistant. 1 Year while in High School

What is your favorite book? Why?

The Holy Bible. It guides and encourages me

Desperado

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

How people can become successful and leave their community never to return to help or rescue another person

A governor is the top executive authority in his or her state. What does that mean do you?

The Governor is the chief executive office and executes the laws of his state, its constitution and the constitution of these United States.

Governors have many responsibilities, which vary from state to state. Which of those do you personally consider the most important in your state?

The use of executive privilege during emergencies or when the legislature is not in session

Different states require governors to have different degrees of responsibility for the state budgeting process. If it were your choice, what do you believe is the appropriate degree of gubernatorial involvement with this process in your state?

In Texas the Lieutenant Governor holds the most influence in budget matters in a part time legislature which meets every 2 years. The Governor is full time and is the everyday manager of state activities.

In most states, governors have the power to make line-item vetoes. If that is true in your state, what would be your philosophy for how and when to use this power?

I agree with this budget procedure

What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and state legislature?

Hopefully, the love and commitment to state over personal ideals. Thus the governor must be a person who visits all of the state to understand the varying needs.

What do you love most about your state?

When I think of Texas I think of Freedom. We are a right to work state where individual rights trump organizations politics.

What do you perceive to be your state's greatest challenges over the next decade?

Ro maintain a our position in the energy field and maintain a balance between use of our natural resources and overall ecology.
