In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
I'm Ed Guzman, and I am running to be the next State Senator from Fort Smith.
My vision is a Fort Smith where state government strengthens the things that make everyday life work, keeps people here, and treats taxpayer dollars like an investment in our future.
That means using my role as a state senator to fight for infrastructure Fort Smith cannot fund alone, protect access to healthcare as a core economic necessity, and build workforce pathways that let people earn a living without having to leave home.
I believe government should focus on outcomes people can see and feel, like an affordable water bill, reliable utilities, access to affordable healthcare, real job training, and public investments that pay off locally, not symbolic legislation that makes headlines but leaves Fort Smith behind.
We have an opportunity to write a new chapter for Fort Smith and for Arkansas, but it will take all of us working together. With your support, I think we can get it done.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
Take a look at your grocery receipt or utility bill and ask: Is anything better than it was four years ago? For Fort Smith families, the "squeeze" is the widening gap between a paycheck and the cost of surviving. With Arkansas now the most food-insecure state in the nation and insurance premiums spiking over 22% this year, the math of daily life isn't adding up. Hard work is in our DNA, but that spirit only works if the trail isn't blocked by a system prioritizing lobbyists over families. I will fight for utility rate transparency, protect neighbors from predatory price hikes, and ensure state investments lower your daily costs—not build more prisons. It’s time for leadership that makes the math work again.Every tax dollar you send to Little Rock is an investment in our future, yet we’ve watched millions flow into schemes like the Franklin County prison while local infrastructure is ignored. For a decade, we’ve been represented by a "yes" vote for the elite rather than a voice for the River Valley. As a former business owner and current UAFS educator, I believe in a Growth Mindset for our economy. We must stop wasting money on symbolic politics and start investing in "earn-while-you-learn" apprenticeships and vocational partnerships. I will demand transparency in how your money is spent and ensure it stays here to build high-wage, 21st-century jobs in Fort Smith.Arkansas ranks 49th in healthcare, with the highest maternal death rate in the nation and a critical doctor shortage in Sebastian County. We cannot be an industrious community if our neighbors are sick or crushed by medical debt. Similarly, we cannot grow if we starve the public schools meant to feed our children's potential. I will be an unwavering voice for protecting Medicaid expansion and keeping public funds in public classrooms. By addressing the youth mental health crisis and ensuring healthcare is treated as an economic necessity, we can catch those falling through the cracks and ensure every family in the River Valley has a fair shot at the American Dream.
