Campaign themes

The following issues were listed on Shepherd's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

Labor: Congress should bring labor law into the 21st century instead of trying to manage it with laws enacted in the 1930’s. The economy, even the world has changed drastically in 80 to 90 years. Americans will welcome the change. Innovative companies–Uber, Airbnb and Etsy–shouldn’t have to seek permission from the government to enter new markets or to challenge competitors.

2nd Amendment Rights: New laws will not keep guns away from criminals any better than current ones have done. But law-abiding citizens will find it more difficult to protect their homes and families. America does not need stricter gun laws; consistent enforcement of the laws in place now will serve the same purpose.

Cybersecurity: This relatively new term describes a second newer term: Cyberwarfare. Our nation cannot afford to lose its best ideas, work and protection to Russia, China and rogue nations whose terrorist mind-sets prefer that we do the work from which they will profit by stealing from us.

Defense: A hard concept for Americans to understand is that President Obama’s mismanagement of our defense has fueled a decline in our military readiness and capabilities. The rising global threats to us are directly related to the fact that U.S. security is weakened by our reduced armed forces ability to respond and prevail against our enemies. Weakness invites aggression. The U.S. must modernize and sustain its forces.

Economy and Jobs:The pursuit of the American Dream and prosperity always seemed possible in past years due to hard work. Immigrants flocked to the U.S. looking for opportunities, to create a place for themselves and their families. Lately the government hinders rather than helps workers by adding more and more legal barriers instead of removing them. What discourages today’s workers? The loss of more than half of each dollar earned to higher taxes and reduced benefits. Regulations, an ever-increasing burden, impedes job creation and economic growth.
