In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
My name is Don DeWitt. I am a retired Detective Sergeant and former Chief of Police. I am a graduate of West Liberty State collage and a resident of Marshall County. I have live in Moundsville for over 25 with my wife and two granddaughters.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
I pride myself on honesty, integrity, and hard work. I have protected and served the community as a police officer for 25 years and would would like to protect WV values and continue to serve the citizens of district six as a member of the House of Delegates. In several surveys and opinions WV has ranked poorly in education, health of its citizens (both physical and mental) and poorly in the overall economy as compared to other states. One survey had us as the unhappiest state in which to live. These surveys do not reflect what the the Mountain State is all about. I, for one, am tired of the State being looked down upon. It is a great state with great people. We just need to play to our strengths, like our natural resources, our work force, and the natural beauty of the state. We also need to figure out where our educational system can improve and how to better spend our tax dollars.I would like to initiate and support legislature that is tougher on crime, not weaker. The opioid epidemic has hit our district hard. We need good in house, long term treatment for the addicts and harsh penalties for the drug dealers. I have seen first hand the damage caused on the individual and their families.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I am passionate about the state and especially my district and the people in it. As an officer I have seen the problems facing our citizens. So the criminal laws of our state would be among one of my passions in public policy. I would also like to focus on government spending and the economy as well. Id like to help bring spending down while providing more jobs and opportunities to our citizens.
