Both of Derek's daughters attend schools in the Puyallup district. Through his observations and involvement with their activities, he has developed a keen sense of what is necessary to maximize their learning opportunities and academic experience.

Derek upholds Five Core Beliefs: 1. Children will always come first; 2. Parents are partners; 3. Every member of the community shares the responsibility for successful schools; 4. Continuous improvement in teaching, leadership and accountability are the keys to our success;

5. Victory is in the classroom.

In owning and operating a small business servicing the aeronautical industry, Derek knows the importance of a budget. Ensuring that every dollar is used wisely is paramount to operating effectively. To Derek, education is about quality not quantity. How education funding is spent, not just how much is spent, impacts student achievement.
