In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
I’m Dayana Bergman, a candidate for the Maryland House of Delegates representing District 5 and a proud first-generation Cuban American immigrant. My family came to the United States seeking asylum, and that experience instilled in me a deep appreciation for service, opportunity, and civic engagement.
My professional background spans healthcare, behavioral health, public education, and community advocacy. I owned and operated a medical diagnostic center, worked as a Registered Behavioral Technician supporting children and families, and served as a Spanish interpreter to help individuals navigate healthcare and education systems. These experiences gave me firsthand insight into the challenges many families face and reinforced my commitment to listening, collaborating, and finding practical solutions.
As the spouse of a retired U.S. Army veteran and the mother of three sons, I understand the importance of strong schools, accessible healthcare, and safe, thriving communities. Throughout my career and volunteer service, I have focused on bringing people together, expanding opportunities, and ensuring every voice is heard.
I’m running for the Maryland House of Delegates because I believe government works best when it is transparent, accountable, and responsive to the people it serves. I want to help build a Maryland where families can afford to live, students receive an excellent education, businesses can succeed, and every resident has the opportunity to thrive.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
Accessibility: Improving access to essential services by expanding reliable public transportation and reducing barriers to healthcare, including primary care, specialty care, and behavioral health services, so residents can more easily obtain the care and support they need.Affordability: Ensuring that essential needs including housing, healthcare, transportation, and other everyday living expenses are within reach for individuals and families, so financial barriers do not prevent people from meeting their basic needs.Accountability: Supporting transparent decision-making, responsible stewardship of public funds, ethical conduct by public officials, and mechanisms for oversight and public participation in government.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I would say public education and quality healthcare providers are my top priorities that I’m very passionate about. Throughout my life and career, I’ve seen firsthand how access to excellent schools and quality healthcare can change lives. I believe government should be accessible, accountable, and focused on helping families thrive by expanding opportunities, improving access to care, and working collaboratively to find practical solutions that strengthen our communities.
