What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

My top three priorities are passing universal healthcare, reforming the criminal justice system, and passing climate legislation.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I am extremely passionate about Criminal Justice Reform, Universal Healthcare, Disability Policy, Climate Policy, Transportation

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I greatly admire Rep. Pramila Jayapal who is an absolutely incredible human being and a very talented leader. Her ability to get things done as head of the Progressive Caucus has been vital in advancing legislation and polcies that will drastically improve the lives Americans.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

I believe that having a real connection to those struggling to get by in America is of vital importance. Too many politicians are disdainful of working class Americans and ignorant of the problems they face.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

Building coalitions to advance the legislation and policies that ensure our society works for every single American regardless of their class, race, gender, ability, sexuality, or religion

What legacy would you like to leave?

I will hell build the social programs that will end poverty in the United States and ensure that every single person has the healthcare, food, and housing they need to live.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

The first major historical event I have a clear memory of is 9/11, I was nine years old at the time

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

My first job was as a busser at a Japanese steak house in Concord, NC. I worked there for roughly a year until I quit after being scheduled to work the day of my high school graduation.

What process do you favor for redistricting?

Our current system of redistricting is enabling politicians to decide the outcomes of elections a decade in advance, we must replace our current system with non-partisan committees.

Do you believe that it's beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?

Experience in government is meaningless if a representative is unwilling to use it to advance an agenda that helps their constituents.

What do you perceive to be the United States' greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?

The greatest challenge the United States faces is drastically reducing it's carbon emissions in the next decade after almost half a century of inaction.

Is there a particular representative, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?

I deeply admire Rep. Pramila Jayapal's ability to build coalitions and craft strong narratives around progressive legislation, I would want to practice these same strategies in Congress

Both sitting representatives and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?

So many people in this district have spoken to me about their struggles to pay for healthcare or for medical debts they incurred in order to simply stay alive, each and every story reminds me just why I am in this fight.

The candidate completed [the profile publisher]'s biographical information submission form:

What is your political philosophy?

When elected, Sobie will work with progressive allies in Congress to pass legislation that will deliver a universal healthcare system, reduce and eliminate carbon emissions, expand the Americans Disability Act, revitalize worker's rights and wages, and drastically reform our criminal justice system. There is a lot to respect in David Price's thirty year record in Congress, but our district needs to be able to help take the lead as our nation faces resurgent white supremacy, impending ecological collapse, and the task of rebuilding institutions destroyed or co-opted by Donald Trump's racist, authoritarian administration.

Is there anything you would like to add?

Curtis Sobie was born at Norfolk Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia. Sobie attended Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and Cabarrus County Schools during their childhood, and attended Central Piedmont Community College for a few years before earning a B.S. from Appalachian State University in 2016. Sobie identifies as gender non-binary, primarily using they/them pronouns but accepts use of he/him pronouns.

During college, Sobie became involved working and volunteering with the Autism community in North Carolina, working with Camp Royall in Moncure, NC and starting a chapter of the Autism Society of North Carolina at Appalachian State University. Following their graduation, they participated in the fellowship program at Camp Royall working with autistic individuals before going on to work as a job coach with the TEACCH Autism Program at the University of North Carolina.[2]
