Background

Cornelius D. Jones was born in Grenada, Mississippi. He served in the U.S. Navy from 2000 to 2018. Jones received a bachelor's degree in sociology from Hartford University in 2006; a master's degree in psychology from Ashford University in 2016; a master's degree and Ph.D. in Christian counseling from Trinity Theological Seminary in 2019; a graduate certificate from Cornell University in 2022; a master's degree in human services with a concentation in trauma and crisis counseling from Regent University in 2023; and a Ph.D. in counseling and psychological studies from Regent University in 2026. His career experience includes working as a behavioral health regional executive, entrepreneur, leadership consultant, and psychological scientist.[1][2][3][4]

Jones was appointed by the Rapides Parish 9th Judicial Court District Attorney to serve as a board member for the Restorative Justice Program from 2009 to 2011.[4]

I’m a father, husband; and veteran that served in our nation’s longest war. I’m also a small business owner and someone that has dedicated my life to for causes greater than myself.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Elected official must ensure they are working on behalf of all voters.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

Working in the best interest of all residents in the district and not just the party that helped to elect to office.

What legacy would you like to leave?

Although I’m not focused on a legacy, it’s my hope that my legacy would consist of me advocating for others.

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

There has been no shortage of struggles in my life. However, I would like to believe that those struggles contribute to my strength.

What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and state legislature?

It’s my belief that the working relationship between the governor and legislature should be respectful and professional at all times.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?

No, in fact, I think we need to get away from only electing and supporting career politicians.

Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?

The late and legendary Congressman John Lewis

Do you believe that compromise is necessary or desirable for policymaking?

I believe compromise is necessary in a position like this. However, those compromises should never come at the expense of constituents or one’s morals.
