In their own words

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

I’m a father, husband, businessman, former NBA Trail Blazer, and Oregonian. I was raised in a family of teachers, so I learned hard work and accountability early. I took out student loans to attend Yale and went on to play 16 years in the NBA. My wife, who is a fifth-generation Oregonian, and I reside in Sisters.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

Affordability and livability. As governor, I will reopen Portland and Oregon for business. If we have good paying jobs and a strong economy, we can lower taxes and cut regulations. Over half our state is living month to month. We have the highest personal income tax in the country for working class Oregonians. That’s why I have proposed that we lower the personal income tax starting with the first $100,000 earned because that should be the baseline for relief, not the ceiling. However, plumbers, skilled tradespeople, and small business owners earning over $100,000 are still being squeezed by high taxes and rising costs. Our state's tax policy must reflect that reality and deliver the relief OregonianEducation. As governor, I will ensure Oregon focuses on the “Science of Reading,” which has proven to be the most effective way to teach literacy. We also have an accountability issue. We have increased spending on education by over 80% in the last ten years and yet, Oregon’s education system is at the bottom. Oregon has great kids and teachers, but our leadership has failed us. The system is broken and we need to fix it. As governor, I will declare a state of emergency on day one focusing on education. We can do so much better, but the system needs to be addressed.Safety. As governor, I will work to clean up our streets and make our communities safe. To do so, we must address addiction, mental illness, and homelessness. Let's begin by auditing homeless programs and ensure funding goes to proven solutions that stop addiction cycles and help people get back on their feet. We also need to work with law enforcement to make sure we are getting violent criminals off our streets.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

It’s time to make Oregon the best place to live, work, and play. I am passionate about fixing our economy, improving our education system, and making our communities safe - these are the three most important issues to Oregonians.
