In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
Raised on a small dairy and tobacco farm in Marion County, Carrie Truitt learned the values of hard work and community early in life. A proud graduate of Marion County High School, she went on to earn degrees from the University of Kentucky and Campbellsville University, building a career devoted entirely to serving others through nonprofit work. From the Lexington Philharmonic to Hosparus Health, and now Leadership Kentucky, she has spent decades raising funds and resources for organizations that strengthen communities.
Closer to home, Carrie chairs the Marion County Board of Education, founded and leads the Marion County Education Foundation, and volunteers with the Marion County Youth Soccer Association. She and her husband Michael, married since 2002, are raising their three children — Jackson, Samuel, and Eleanor — right here in the community she loves and has always called home.
Now, Carrie is running for State Senate to fight for strong and safe schools, affordable housing and food security, and accessible healthcare for every family in the district.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
Families want to know their children are being prepared for success, not just trained to pass a test. I believe we place too much emphasis at the state level on standardized testing and not enough on science-based instruction and individualized learning. Mississippi’s dramatic rise in 4th grade literacy rankings is proof that when a state legislature trusts educators, invests in the right resources, and gives students the time they need to succeed, results follow. I will work alongside teachers and administrators to build standards that actually serve our children.Families are feeling overwhelmed, especially first-time buyers. The average age of a first-time homebuyer is now 40, and that number tells a heartbreaking story. The starter homes young
families need simply aren’t being built in sufficient numbers because the return on investment isn’t there for builders. I will work to change that equation by increasing investment in the Affordable Housing Trust Fund administered by the Kentucky Housing Corporation, support legislation that streamlines the permitting process, and collaborate with local governments to ensure that planning and zoning regulations support the construction of affordable housing. Our healthcare system has become driven by insurance companies rather than healthcare professionals. I will work to strengthen insurance regulations, push for pricing transparency, and expand access to community health centers and rural clinics because primary care is always
better than emergent care, for families and for the budget.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
As seen in the key messages above, I am passionate about public education, housing affordability, and healthcare access. I also recognize that affordability in general has gotten out of reach for families across Kentucky. There can be no quality of life for any of us if essential needs are not accessible for all of us.
