In their own words

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

I’m a retired mine inspector with more than forty years of experience in coal mining, workplace safety, and labor advocacy. I’m proud to be a Nicholas County native.

I graduated from Nicholas County High School in 1980 and went straight to work in the coal mines. Like many local families, my life has been built on hard work, responsibility, and looking out for others.

In 1981, I married my wife, K Lee Willman, and we raised two sons—one who served in the U.S. Marine Corps and one working in the private sector.

Over my career, I worked underground, as an industrial electrician and mechanic, and later returned home to West Virginia’s mines. I advanced into roles focused on equipment, inspections, and safety.

In 2004, I joined West Virginia Miners’ Health, Safety & Training, teaching hazard recognition and emergency response. I later served with MSHA, inspecting mines and enforcing federal safety standards until a stroke led to my retirement in 2020.

I’ve served with UMWA Local 8843, AFGE Local 3181, and as a volunteer firefighter. I also volunteer with the West Virginia Gold Star Mothers Bridge Ride.

Today, I teach miner safety part-time, because experience matters. I believe leadership comes from those who’ve done the work and respect working families.
