In their own words

State Comptroller

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

I’m Bruce Cole. I'm a CPA, an MBA, a Ph.D., and a Columbia-based real estate advisor with over four decades of experience in finance, accounting, and public service.

I am blessed to have had a career that has uniquely prepared me for this moment (e.g., auditing at KPMG, CFO of the Boston Public Library, leading John Hancock’s $200 million corporate restructuring, teaching at USC, etc.). I've managed billions in assets, built organizations from the ground up and served to make our state better (e.g., Sierra Club State Chair, Richland County Airport Commissioner, etc.). South Carolina has given my family a home and I want to pay it forward.

Our state's financial management is under federal investigation for bad accounting, and our retirement system is dangerously underfunded. These aren't abstract problems. They are failures of accountability that affect every taxpayer in this state. I'm running for Comptroller General because South Carolinians deserve better. The CG must be more than a political figure. This office demands a credentialed, experienced financial professional who understands government, technology, and people. I am that person.

I will bring transparency to state finances, restore confidence in our financial reporting, and build a culture where every dollar is tracked, every result is measured, and every South Carolinian can trust their government. This isn't about party. It's about competence, integrity, and the future our state deserves.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

Why Bruce? He believes the people of South Carolina deserve a watchdog who has actually done this work, not just talked about it. With a Ph.D. in Planning, Design and the Built Environment from Clemson, an MBA in Finance from Stanford, and a CPA license maintained across three states, I bring a rare combination of academic rigor and real-world experience to this race. But credentials alone don't move the needle…results do. He has served as a CFO, a university professor, and a corporate turnaround expert. No other candidate brings this depth of financial expertise to this office. When it comes to managing your tax dollars, experience and credentials matter, and Bruce Cole has both. Why now? South Carolina's financial house is not in order. The state is under federal investigation for material errors in its financial statements, and the public employee retirement system is severely underfunded. This puts the retirement security of teachers, law enforcement officers, and state workers and all taxpayer dollars at risk. This didn't happen overnight, and it won't fix itself. Bruce Cole has spent his career identifying financial failures, correcting them, and building systems that last. South Carolinians deserve a Comptroller General who will hold government accountable… and finally get it right. Why do I care? I have been fortunate, educated at Harvard, Stanford, and Clemson, with a career that has taken me from Wall Street to Main Street. Now I want to give back. As a longtime Columbia resident, university professor, Sierra Club State Chair, and founder of a social policy think tank, I have dedicated myself to making South Carolina stronger. Running for Comptroller General isn't about ambition, it's about obligation. When you have the skills to solve a serious problem, you step up. That's exactly what I am doing.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I believe every tax dollar is a promise, a promise to deliver real results for real people. As Comptroller General, I'm passionate about building a culture of accountability, transparency, and performance in state government.

Public policy should be measured by one standard: does it create genuine public value? Not political wins. Not bureaucratic outputs. Actual, measurable improvements in people's lives.

South Carolinians deserve to know how their money is spent, whether it's working, and who is responsible when it isn't. I will make that information clear, accessible, and honest, because good government isn't a partisan idea. It's what every voter, regardless of party, has every right to expect.
