In their own words

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

My name is Brit Robinson. I’m running for Congress as a Democratic Socialist, military spouse, and working-class candidate fighting to build a safer future for us all where our basic needs are met, the working class stops being exploited by the richest, and where joy, happiness, and hope for our futures is a reality.

As someone who is in the military, LGBTQ+, and disability communities, along with a biracial and multicultural family, I felt like I had a duty to step up and fight back against this administration.

The status quo isn't working and it's time for a new generation to lead the way forward through our ever-changing society prioritizing people's basic needs and safety.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

• UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE & BASIC NEEDS

We have a right to our basic needs like healthcare, healthy food, and affordable housing and I believe it is the responsibility of the government to make sure that those needs are met. While people are struggling to afford what they need to survive, the richest people in the country just keep getting richer while our bills go up. It's time that we shifted our country's priorities to taking care of its people.

I'm fighting for free universal healthcare, free college & trade programs, affordable housing, healthy food, and $30 min wage by 2030.• END WARS & GENOCIDE, CARE FOR MILITARY SERVICEMEMBERS

No endless wars, stop funding Israel's genocide against Palestine, and abolish ICE & prosecute this entire administration for their crimes. Reduce military budget, force DOD to pass their audit to limit military industrial complex, & end corporate American imperialism abroad. Reclaim Congress’s power to instigate military action. Improve quality of military & veterans' healthcare & expand benefits for housing, rehabilitation & employment.• MONEY OUT OF POLITICS & END CORRUPTION

We need young progressive Representatives from working-class backgrounds who will fight to put people first over the greed of billionaires, corporations, and corrupt politicians. That starts with candidates like myself who don't accept corporate PAC money or donations from groups like AIPAC – ones who are dedicated to the People for the sake of progress, not for political gain or power. We need to overturn Citizens United & curb corporate influence, strengthen anti-corruption laws & ban stock trading, and expand the Supreme Court & U.S. House.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Defending equal rights for all and social safety nets against corporate exploitation and billionaire greed. We need to pursue domestic and foreign policy centered on peace & human dignity.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Honesty, strong moral code, empathy, dedication. As a Representative, your job is to listen to your constituents and fight for their wants and needs in Congress. There must be a consistent and clear line of communication available for feedback from the district. You must stay grounded knowing that you've been elected to be a civil servant and are not entitled to the office.

What legacy would you like to leave?

I hope that I have made positive change in people's lives., widened the path for others to do similar work to push the necessary progressive policies that protect against exploitation, greed and bigotry.

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

I have endometriosis where cells similar to the ones in a uterus grow in the abdominal cavity, causing symptoms like scarring, cysts, and extreme pain. It has taken a significant negative toll in my life starting in elementary school, and often making me miss social activities, school, and work. Once I was in my early 20's, I was able to get the necessary surgeries to manage my symptoms and participate in life more fully with the credit going the health insurance military families receive. I would not be able to be a functioning member of society, let alone run for Congress, if I didn't have the quality of healthcare I do for no cost to us. My mom didn't have the same situation, however. When I was going into high school, she got sick but couldn't afford health insurance because of her pre-existing conditions. We lost everything as a result, including needing food assistance and getting evicted.

Experiences like these are what have shaped me into the person I am today – someone who is dedicated to ensuring everyone can get the healthcare they need, regardless of circumstances.
