In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
I am a lifelong Minnesotan, born and raised in Central MN. Growing up on a dairy farm with my six sisters and three brothers taught me about hard work and the importance of neighbors. After college I moved to the Twin Cities and began working as a software engineer for various software vendors and leasing companies. My wife and I and five children have lived in Woodbury since 2010.
While I do not have elected office experience, I know how to break down complex problems, facilitate understanding between parties and find fresh solutions. I bring fresh perspective rather than political experience. I will learn about your issue. I may not vote your way, but I’m going to do the job of a representative of the people - actually listening to and representing you.
I believe in the governing principle of subsidiarity which means that government decisions should be made by the unit of government closest to the people who are affected by those decisions. This usually means more local government empowerment and less power at the federal level. A more decentralized government means you the citizen has more power. Our duty as citizens is then to take that freedom and power to take care of our neighbors and ourselves to the best of our ability. This wards off and neuters the forces of tyranny.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
We are stuck in a rut, arguing about the same issues for the past 40 years. Do the people in power actually want to fix anything? We have the tools to move forward but we have to start using them. For one, the Legislature should support an Article V Convention. This will allow We the People, through state legislatures, to amend the Constitution. We could implement term limits and effective campaign finance reform.
It is important to have strong beliefs. It is not about rolling over on an issue that is critical for you. I certainly won’t do that. We may remain divided on those issues. But we should not use division as a tactic. That is addictive crack that feels good in the short run but will kill us as a country in the long run.For Minnesota to thrive, we need a healthy business climate that generates local wealth and taxes in order to raise families, support schools, and provide other basic government services. To state the obvious: People need places to work. We must repeal laws that punish businesses or make it difficult to start and run businesses. The Minnesota corporate tax is #2 overall and the highest for small businesses. This has to come down to stop driving businesses out of state.
Minnesota is falling behind in education which used to attract employers looking for good talent. We used to be a moderate-high tax state providing high service and an educated workforce. We have become a very high tax state with services lagging behind other statesAI and automation are poised to cause major economic disruption. Currently, most of the power around AI resides with multi-national corporations that aren't concerned about threats to our well-being. This is one area where government must represent the ordinary people and not just go where the mighty corporate PAC money leads them. I am committed to protecting your local resources and the electrical grid from the voracious electricity appetite of data centers.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I believe at the national level, our political muscles have atrophied and locked into certain patterns because those patterns benefit the powerful money interests. We used to regularly amend the Constitution when needed. We used to expand the House of Representatives every 10 years, but stopped doing that too. To the extent that we can affect this at the state level, we must do our part.
I believe in pro-life efforts inside and outside of government. When I attended my first political event, the candidate spoke of how the same belief in human rights to end slavery and segregation in the US is what caused him to be pro-life. Our rights come from God. If we deny those rights to others, how long before we lose our other cherished rights.
