In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
My name is Brett “Shep” Shepherd. I am an Independent candidate for Maryland House of Delegates in District 6. I’m life long Dundalk resident, Frostburg State University graduate, self employed, and community advocate running to give Dundalk, Essex, Edgemere, Sparrows Point, Fort Howard, and the rest of Eastern Baltimore County a voice outside the two-party system.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
Maryland needs more independent voices. The two major parties control too much of the process before voters ever get a real choice. I’m running without party bosses, special interests, or a political machine so District 6 has a Delegate who answers to residents first. My campaign is focused on practical, local results: protecting hunting and fishing rights, pushing for a real Eastpoint redevelopment plan, real rent court reform that helps all sides involved, and making sure Eastern Baltimore County is not ignored while decisions are made behind closed doors.Government should make everyday life easier, not harder. I support free school lunch for students, lower costs where the state can help, safer and cleaner communities, and a common-sense approach that puts working families ahead of partisan fights.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I am passionate about policies that make government practical, accountable, and connected to everyday residents.
My top issues are ballot access and election fairness, because independent and third-party candidates should not face unfair barriers while the two major parties benefit from taxpayer-funded primaries.
I also care about education, especially making sure students have access to school meals.
Locally, I am focused on Eastern Baltimore County redevelopment, including Fort Howard, Eastpoint Mall, the Key Bridge rebuild, Back River cleanup, and bringing real investment back to Dundalk, Essex, Edgemere, Sparrows Point, and Fort Howard.
I also care about court and housing policy because of my work as a rent court agent.
