In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
I was born and raised in Decatur, Alabama.
I began working in the industrial supply business at age 16.
I earned an associate degree from John C. Calhoun Community College and a bachelor's degree from Athens State University before going on to earn my law degree from the University of Alabama School of Law.
Career.
I began my legal career at the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals, where I served as a Central Staff Attorney, researching legal issues, analyzing questions presented by appellate counsel, and writing opinions for the state's criminal appeals court.
I then served as an Assistant Attorney General at the Alabama Attorney General's Office under two Republican Attorneys General, prosecuting gun crimes, public corruption, and white-collar crimes.
I subsequently served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama, prosecuting federal crimes at the federal level.
I later served as Chief of Staff to an Alabama Public Service Commission Commissioner, a role that provided me direct experience with the commission's internal operations, rate-setting processes, and regulatory structure. I also worked as a conservative talk show host, hosting radio programs and serving as co-host of a live television talk show.
I currently live with my wife, Marie, in Tuscumbia Alabama and have two children, Hannah and Daniel.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
End the Hidden Tax.
Every month when Alabamians pay their utility bills, they're paying more than just for electricity and gas. The PSC requires utilities to pay millions more than needed, then ships that money to Montgomery's General Fund instead of returning it to ratepayers. That's a hidden tax you never voted for, and I'll fight to end it.Transparency & Accountability.
The Public Service Commission hasn't held a formal rate hearing for Alabama Power since 1982. That's 40+ years of rubber-stamping rate increases behind closed doors. I'll bring transparency back to the PSC and make sure your voice is heard when utilities want to raise your rates.Lower Utility Bills.
The mission of the Alabama Public Service Commission is "To provide a balance between regulated companies and consumers in order to provide consumers with safe, adequate, and reliable services at affordable rates." The PSC has failed to accomplish its mission. Alabama families pay some of the highest utility bills in the nation. With the knowledge I gained while serving as the Chief of Staff for one of the commissioners at the PSC, I know exactly what needs to be changed and I will work to make those changes happen.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
My campaign focuses on reform of the Alabama Public Service Commission. I've called for an end to what I say is a "hidden tax,". The PSC requires utilities to pay more than necessary and directs the surplus to the state's General Fund rather than returning it to ratepayers. The PSC has not held a formal rate hearing for Alabama Power since 1982, I pledge to restore transparency and public participation to the rate-setting process. Alabama families pay some of the highest utility bills in the nation, showing that the PSC has failed its core mission of ensuring affordable, reliable utility service for consumers.
