In their own words

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

I am a mother and grandmother who has lived in Arizona for 39 years. I also am a retired attorney who worked in healthcare for 30 years before going to law school. I routinely review hundreds of bills during each Legislative session. What I began seeing over the past few years, especially the last 3 years, was alarming: a sharp rise in legislation aimed at limiting our Constitutional rights, including voting rights, restricting healthcare access, and making it harder for Arizonans to afford food, housing, and utilities. Bills harming public education and attacking vulnerable communities have also increased every year. These bills are hurting real people. That is why I am running.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

As a retired attorney with a year of Constitutional Law education, I am a strong proponent of, and believe in the sanctity of, our Constitution. My priority as an Arizona Senator would be to truly protect our Constitutional rights, including voting rights, our right to put referendums on the ballot, free speech, peaceful assembly, and due process for all Arizonans, as well as protecting vulnerable communities. Protecting state constitutional rights also is important, such as protecting the state constitutional amendment providing women’s healthcare. With my 30-year healthcare background, I’ve seen firsthand the terrible outcome and life-long debt incurred for those with no health insurance. With national and state bills significantly affecting health insurance for millions of people, many will be unable to obtain health insurance. Arizona needs to develop a state plan, or even new program, that ensures every resident can receive the healthcare they need without incurring life-long debt and lowers the cost of healthcare and healthcare insurance.

Also, support the 80–90% of Arizona students in public schools by fully funding public schools. Establish oversight, caps, and accountability for the voucher program that has drained more than $1 billion from the state budget. The rising cost of food, housing, electricity, and water is a major nonpartisan concern of people across the country, including Arizona. For many, the cost of monthly food has doubled under this administration, and water and electricity costs have been much higher than before. Included in this issue is the need to establish reasonable controls on the energy and water use, as well as the location and number, of large data centers and to study their impact on Arizonans’ utilities. Housing costs can be brought down by stopping corporations from buying large numbers of empty homes, only to sell them for much higher prices.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

All of my key message areas discussed above.
