In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
I have lived, worked, and served the community of Carlisle for over 32 years. I am a business owner and farmer with my husband at our family farm, Hayman Farms, where we raise and sell all-natural, grass fed Hereford beef, as well as hay to hay customers.
Prior to being sworn in as State Representative in 2019, I served on the Cumberland Valley School Board for eight years and as a township auditor prior to that - both of which are unpaid volunteer public service positions.
I currently serve on the House Education Committee, the Labor and Industry Committee, the Commerce Committee and Adult Aging Committee. I have prime sponsored many pieces of policy over the years, and have had four signed into law, most notably the Agritourism legislation which helped farmers open up their property to visitors with limited liability. I have prime sponsored and fought for women in sports to keep their Title IX rights and opportunities, and have championed apprenticeship legislation from the beginning of my legislative career. I am currently the Chair of the ALEC Education Task Force.
I am a blessed wife and mom of three grown children, and am an active member of Youngs Global Methodist Church. I am an Elk, and a Rotarian, and I like to hunt and garden.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
Affordability. You don't approach the affordability crisis in our region with slogans, but with real solutions. Thousands of people are leaving PA because our tax and regulatory climate is among the worst in the nation. We need to unleash all of the energy resources that our state can offer to reduce costs to consumers, including drilling for natural gas. With that revenue, we pass legislation to cut the gas tax, decrease permitting timelines and harmful regulations that are choking businesses and increasing the cost of housing and daycare.Agriculture. I am a farmer and I support farmland preservation, however, you can't preserve farmland without supporting the farming workforce. PA has the most restrictive regulatory environment for farmers, whether they are disturbing only one acre of land to build a barn, to stormwater management, to packaging and butchering, and much more. All regulatory blockades increase the cost of your food, so eliminating them or reducing them is key. I support incentivizing the next generation of farmers with low interest loans on equipment and land, and private public partnerships with a lease to own. I prime sponsored the protecting farmland from foreign adversaries and support manufacturing all farm equipment and technology made in America.Education. Funding students not systems. Every parent has the right to choose what is best for their child when it comes to education. Student population is decreasing while state funding keeps increasing and scores are not improving overall. We spend over $23,000 per student which is the 7th highest in the nation, and in the last 10 years district revenue from all sources has increased by almost $20 billion. The recent House majority trend to take from other public schools and private school funding is regressive and a renewed emphasis on core subject proficiency is a must. I support standards review, science of reading and math, only one yearly assessment, condensed teacher certification process, and teacher stipends for STEM.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Labor and Education policy in general, but also any policy that preserves and upholds the God-given unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness in our Constitution. I am passionate about any legislation that impacts my district and constituency in a positive way. Protecting women in sports; parental rights; voter ID and limiting government are just a few of the state initiatives I am passionate about as well.
