In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
I am Ayanna Khan-Flowers, a mother, business leader, community advocate, and candidate for Delaware State Representative in District 9. My life and experiences have taught me that leadership begins with listening, showing up, and understanding the real challenges people face every day.
I have built my career around service, leadership, and creating opportunities for others. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Park University and a Master of Science in Human Services from Wilmington University. My professional and community experiences have allowed me to work alongside families, small business owners, entrepreneurs, seniors, and community leaders, giving me a firsthand understanding of both the opportunities and challenges facing our communities.
I am running because District 9 deserves leadership that is present, accessible, transparent, and focused on results. I am not interested in politics for the sake of politics. I want to bring people together, listen to different perspectives, ask the difficult questions, and make responsible decisions that improve people's everyday lives. Most importantly, I want every resident to know they have a voice and someone in Dover who will work hard to represent it.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
Supporting small businesses, strengthening our local economy, and making life more affordable are central priorities of my campaign. Small businesses and entrepreneurs create jobs, strengthen neighborhoods, and help build thriving communities, and they deserve a government that helps them succeed rather than creating unnecessary barriers. I will advocate for small and minority-owned businesses, entrepreneurs, workforce development, and economic opportunities that allow more residents to build wealth and succeed. I will also work to address the rising costs affecting families, seniors, and businesses, including housing and utilities. As District 9 grows, our economic progress should create opportunity for everyone.Strong public schools and responsible growth are essential to the future of District 9. As our community grows, our schools, roads, infrastructure, and public services must keep pace. I will advocate for competitive teacher pay, safe and supportive schools, responsible education funding, transparency and accountability, and strong college, career, and workforce pathways for students. We must plan development thoughtfully, protect our quality of life, and ensure residents have a meaningful voice in decisions that shape their neighborhoods and communities.Transparent, accountable, and accessible government is fundamental to the leadership I will bring to Dover. Representation begins with listening, and residents deserve an elected official who is present, responsive, and engaged throughout the entire term. I will communicate openly, respect taxpayer dollars, ask tough questions, and make decisions based on what best serves our community. I will listen to different perspectives, work with others to find practical solutions, and make sure the voices and concerns of District 9 are heard in Dover.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I am passionate about making government work better for everyday people. My priorities include affordable housing and utilities, strong public schools, responsible growth, support for seniors, small-business development, workforce opportunities, public safety, and government transparency. I am especially focused on ensuring that as our community grows, families are not priced out or left behind. I believe good policy starts by listening to the people affected by it and finding practical solutions that improve their quality of life.
