In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
I’m Anthony Oberman — a husband, father of two incredible girls, retired police officer, and lifelong
Northwest Indiana resident. I’m running because I believe Indiana families deserve safer
communities, stronger public schools, and an economy that works for working people again.
I spent my career serving and protecting others, often meeting families on some of the hardest days
of their lives. That experience shaped how I see leadership: people want honesty, accountability,
and someone who understands the real challenges they face every day.
As a dad, I’m deeply invested in the future of our communities. I volunteer in my daughters’ schools,
and I see firsthand the pressure families, teachers, and students are under. Rising costs,
overcrowded classrooms, and growing concerns about safety are affecting families across our
region.
I grew up in a union household, and I understand the value of hard work, strong communities, and
economic opportunity. Northwest Indiana was built by working families, small businesses, and
organized labor — and I believe we need leadership that fights to protect and strengthen that
foundation.
I’m running to bring practical, accountable leadership to Indianapolis — leadership focused on
affordability, public education, public safety, and defending the middle class. I believe with the right
leadership, Northwest Indiana can lead the way in building a stronger future for Indiana families.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
Protecting Families and Keeping Communities Safe
As a retired police officer and father of two young girls, keeping families safe is personal to me.
Public safety starts with strong communities, well-supported first responders, and protecting our
kids from modern threats both online and in our neighborhoods. We need real investment in
staffing, training, and mental health resources for first responders, while also ensuring schools and
families have the tools to educate and protect children from exploitation, online predators, and
violence. Safe communities create stronger families, stronger schools, and stronger local economies.Protecting Public Education
Every child deserves access to a strong public education, regardless of their ZIP code. Right now,
Indiana public schools are facing growing financial pressure from funding shifts and policies that
pull resources away from neighborhood schools. That means larger class sizes, fewer teachers, and
fewer opportunities for students. I believe public dollars should support public schools. As a parent
who volunteers in my children’s classrooms, I’ve seen the strain educators and students are facing
firsthand. Investing in public education means investing in our workforce, our communities, and
Indiana’s future.Affordability and Defending the Middle Class
Working families across Indiana are being squeezed by rising costs, especially utility bills and
everyday expenses. Families should not have to choose between paying bills and putting food on
the table. I’m running to fight for greater accountability from utility companies, stronger
protections for ratepayers, and policies that support working families, unions, and small
businesses. Northwest Indiana was built by the middle class, and we need leadership focused on
protecting good-paying jobs, creating economic opportunity, and making it easier for families and
small businesses to succeed.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I’m passionate about policies that strengthen families and improve quality of life for working
people across Indiana.
My priorities include:
Protecting and strengthening public education
Keeping communities and children safe
Supporting first responders and mental health resources
Holding utility companies accountable and improving affordability
Defending the middle class through support for unions and small business
Expanding economic opportunity for working families
Ensuring government accountability and transparency
I believe effective public policy should focus on practical solutions that improve everyday life
safer neighborhoods, stronger schools, affordable living, and opportunities for families to build a
stable future in NWI.
