Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
I’m a proud Mom of two boys, a 20 year Forsyth County resident, a homeowner, a successful small business owner and a committed community volunteer. I’m also incredibly proud to be our candidate for NC HD 74.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
It’s time to fight against inflation. Our families and businesses deserve more help from Raleigh. Our schools and teacher pay have dropped to 48th in the nation under Jeff Zenger’s leadership. That’s just wrong. As our next State Representative I’ll fight to fully fund our kid’s schools and increase teacher pay to the national average. As a woman I have fewer rights in North Carolina than any time since I was born. That’s ridiculous. Individual freedoms are being curtailed and our democracy is being threatened.
That’s why as our next State Representative I’ll fight to protect individual freedoms, restore reproductive justice, expand voting rights protections, and defend our democracy.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Making our kids schools the best they can be, and making every Forsyth County neighborhood safer so our kids can play safely in the yard.
I look up to several women in my day to day life. Both of my boys went to West Forsyth High School. Have you met any of the teachers there? Every one of them is amazing!
I've always loved talented North Carolina women like Nina Simone, Etta Baker and Roberta Flack and Tori Amos. There are a lot of amazing female artists in our community.
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
Yes! I personally love Harvard professor Michael Sandel’s “Justice: What’s the right thing to do?” It’s a fantastic intro to ethics and morality and being raised in a very religious home where we valued weekly service to those in our congregation, it really spoke to me.
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Desire to serve, accountability and honesty.
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
Compassionate, hard working, ethical, accessible and transparent.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Accessibility to every resident in the district, voting how the district wants you to vote, and showing up to create more good jobs, protect our rights, and build a better Forsyth County.
What legacy would you like to leave?
Building a better Forsyth County for every resident.
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
The Challenger explosion always stands out for me. I was still a kid - not yet a teenager. But it left a permanent scar on me. What a tragedy.
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
When I was 15, a high school friend of mine and I were hired out of a leadership program to do follow up calls to customers who had auto repair work done. It was basically a customer service job. I loved it. We reported to an office on the 3rd floor. We felt so grown up!
What is your favorite book? Why?
Whatever the last thing I read is. I love learning new things and I am a fickle fan. I love the written word, but move through artists and genres quickly.
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Well now that I’ve mentioned Tori Amos it’s “ if the good Lord’s willing, and the creek, don’t rise.”
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Watching my parents age while watching my two boys grow into thriving, free-range young adults.
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and state legislature?
The Governor signs into law bills passed by a majority of members.
What do you perceive to be your state's greatest challenges over the next decade?
Plummeting schools and skyrocketing inflation.
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
No
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Yes. It’s helpful to have a foundation of mutual trust and respect in order to move or block legislation.
Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
No
Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?
No
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
I am always moved by listening to fellow Moms in Forsyth County talk about the impact good teachers have on our kids, and also younger women in Forsyth County being so afraid that Jeff Zenger’s out of touch extremism with threaten their health, family planning, or even their life.
Tell us your favorite joke.
I have 2 boys, so we do bad dad jokes in our house. What’s orange and red and full of disappointment? High school pizza. To me jokes are about getting your teenager to smile, so it has to be relatable!
Should the legislature oversee or grant the use of emergency powers?
Yes
What is the first bill you would introduce if elected?
I would file a bill to end gerrymandering. When politicians stop shopping for voters and are held accountable by voters, I think you will see an end to the distraction of culture wars and a real set of solutions to real problems like inflation.
What organizations or individuals have endorsed your campaign?
Carolina Federation. Progressive Caucus. Most mayors in our County. Several legislators.
What committees interest you?
Education. Health. Housing.
What are your views on financial transparency and government accountability?
You can’t be transparent or accountable enough. It’s why I hold weekly listening sessions in Forsyth County and my email and phone number are listed on everything that goes out.
