In their own words

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

I’m an immigrant who worked my way up surrounded by poverty, built a successful career — first as an academic, then in business, and then starting a charity, Feed A Billion, which delivered more than 7 million meals to people in need.

After earning a Ph.D. and serving as an Assistant Professor, I entered the corporate world. I then launched a successful early web company in 1998, living through the dot-com boom and bust.

I moved to Georgia in 2004, where I raised his two children and sent them to public schools. There, I started work at an insurance company, where I helped lead the company for a decade. As someone who has worked in the insurance industry, I know exactly how it works — and exactly where it's failing you.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

I’m running for Insurance Commissioner to put consumers first. Georgians deserve an insurance department that has their back, and the current system is not working for them. Insurance has become unaffordable for so many families. As your Insurance Commissioner, I’ll fight for lower premiums. I’ll hold the industry accountable. And I’ll tackle corruption head-on.I know how insurance companies operate from the inside — and I want to use my experience to make that system work better for Georgia families. I’m not anti-industry — I’m pro-consumer. I’m going to make sure the office works for the people. I’m not trying to build a political career, and I’m not beholden to industry lobbyists. I won’t answer to anyone except the people of Georgia.I’ll bring down premiums by making insurance companies justify their rate hikes — unlike now, when they can raise rates whenever they want. I’ll hold insurers accountable. I’ll reopen and expand investigations into insurers that don’t treat consumers fairly. I'll make pricing fair, because where you live and your credit history shouldn’t affect what you pay. I'll fight hard for Medicaid expansion, because Georgians need healthcare now, not later — and because rural communities across Georgia need access to hospitals.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Medicaid expansion
