Background

Allen Shen was born in China. He served in the U.S. Army from 1998 to 2010. Shen studied at Minnesota State University and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota in 2011. His career experience includes working in business communication. Shen has been affiliated with AARM, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, and YPM.[1]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

*Make it easy for small businesses to grow, take away the excess fees and regulations

Make Minnesota self-sufficient from relaying on foreign energy and manufacturing

State Government should only buy American made products

Lower or phase out Minnesota State Income taxes

Reduce the power of government, starting from limiting governor's emergency power.

Governor's emergency power should not be longer than seven days, and any extension of such emergency power should be passed by super majority in both house and senate

I look up to JFK and Ronald Reagan

I admire the examples of JFK's handling on the Cuban Missile Crisis and Reagan's Peace through Strength.

For a government we should be soft and care to our own people.

We as a nation or government should know when to be tough to our global adversaries and potential enemies.

I believe I have strong work ethics and always doing what's right, not just legally but morally and ethically.

I would allow the ten commandments to guide me for decision making on what's right and wrong.

Checks and Balances

Governor is the executive branch whose role is to enforce the existing laws.

Legislature is the branch that passes bills on the floors that can become laws.

Most ideal relationship I think is to limit the power for each other and expose corruptions and kick-backs.

What do you perceive to be your state's greatest challenges over the next decade?

What are the benefits and drawbacks of a unicameral state legislature, in your opinion?

Benefit: More efficient and can speed up on legislative processes.

Drawback: Less Checks and Balances on bills passed in the chamber

It can help but not necessary.

Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?

Small Business owners and Self-Employed workers

Excessive and unnecessary fees, licensing costs, mandatory courses, and regulations are suffocating many of them, they can barely keep their heads above water. The State should make it easier for them to operate their businesses, not harder.
