In their own words

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

My name is Alex Wait and I am a proud resident of Granger, Indiana where my family has lived for 25 years. I had the absolute best childhood growing up in the Michiana area where I went to great schools and lived in a safe community.

The public education I got from Penn-Harris-Madison schools set me up for life and allowed me to graduate from Xavier University with a double major before I received my master’s degree from King’s College London. I used my education to become a successful scriptwriter for a YouTube channel with almost two million subscribers. When Katie and I decided to start a family, moving back to Granger was a no-brainer.

Although we are very happy after welcoming a little girl into our lives last May, something is wrong in our community. Our schools are getting more expensive and Indiana’s state government is depriving our kids of needed resources. Parents like us are constantly squeezed by the rising costs of childcare while Indianapolis shows no interest in helping.

People who want to send their kids to the best public schools in the state can barely afford to live in the PHM or Mishawaka school districts. Katie and I are afraid that we will have to deal with one of a parent’s worst nightmare: that our kids won’t have the same enriching and safe childhood that we did.

Unfortunately, Indiana’s out-of-touch state government is the biggest problem.

That’s why I’m running for Indiana 5th Statehouse District.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

I oppose the Indiana Statehouse purposely starving our public schools of funding under the guise of "school choice."

- 90% of Hoosier kids attend public schools, their parents have already made their choice and it's time we support them by strengthening our public schools.

- We cannot keep asking our educators to do more with less. We need to end this completely unnecessary war on our teachers and give them the support they are begging for.

- When funding cuts are made to our schools, the only way to make up for those budget shortfalls is for local governments to increase taxes which come out of your bank accounts. How about our state government funds our schools properly so taxpayers aren’t left holding the bag?We need to control inflation and rising prices in Indiana.

- As state representative, I will introduce a bill drawing from our budget surplus to finally fix Indiana’s struggling power grid. After all, what is the point of having a surplus if you don’t use it to fix problems?

- When school superintendents say they can't pay their utility bills, that's not a budget issue — it's a moral failure. As state representative, I will push for rate structures that don't force impossible choices between groceries and electric bills.I support holding data center companies accountable.

- As state representative, I will introduce a bill that will require companies to let local communities know exactly how much we will be spending for these projects BEFORE they break ground. No more NDAs, no more vague promises of donations to local schools, give us the hard facts in writing if you want to build in our community. We deserve a veto if a data center does not benefit us.

- I will also author a bill to strengthen Indiana’s biometric privacy laws that will require big tech companies to inform Hoosiers of their data collection policies and obtain consent. This will also define when and how your personal data will be used and destroyed by these companies.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I believe gerrymandering is the biggest threat to our democracy. Gerrymandering erodes trust in our elections, promotes extremist candidates, and discourages participation in elections voters view as predetermined. We have got to make it so career politicians can’t choose their own voters.

- As state representative, I will introduce a bill to create a non-partisan redistricting commission to draw new maps for Indiana every ten years as required by Article IV, Section 5 of our state constitution. No more violating our constitution!

- This commission will be independent of the legislature and the governor’s office. It would be composed of members of both parties along with independent voters.

What organizations or individuals have endorsed your campaign?

- Former U.S. Senator and Ambassador Joe Donnelly

- State Representative Maureen Bauer

- State Representative Ryan Dvorak

- Trustee Jason Critchlow
