About Us
TrueVote.US is an outgrowth of a five-year campaign for verifiable voting
in Maryland. The campaign by TrueVoteMD.org was a cross-partisan effort
of thousands of Maryland voters who wanted to end the failed experiment
with paperless voting.
Maryland has purchased Diebold paperless electronic voting machines
and invested $100 million in the machines. The administrator of the Board
of Elections was very close to the Diebold Corporation even serving as
a spokesperson in an advertisement for the corporation in 2007.
Persistence paid off and Maryland is now transitioning to a paper-based
voting system with an optical scan counters.
While there is still work to be done in Maryland there is need for change
nationally as well as an opportunity thanks to an emergency bill being
considered in Congress that could improve election integrity in time for
the 2008 election.
Ensuring that votes are counted as cast is only one of the many challenges
in the U.S. democracy in the United States. But, it is the basic foundation
of a democracy. TrueVote.US will work on other democracy reforms in the
future.
